Internal Hemorrhoids Medicine

hemorrhoids productsInternal hemorrhoids develop inside the anal canal and are not visible on the surface until they become large and protrude out of the anus as ‘prolapsed hemorrhoids’. The root cause of internal hemorrhoids is the same as that of external hemorrhoids, namely excessive straining of the veins in the rectal area. Blood may issue from the internal hemorrhoids, in which case they are called ‘bleeding hemorrhoids’. To treat hemorrhoid symptoms, various kinds of internal hemorrhoids medicine are used. Internal hemorrhoids medicine falls into different categories varying from dietary choices to prescription and over-the-counter medications, and also to herbal remedies. Broadly, internal hemorrhoids medicine may be divided into three main categories: dietary control, prescription and over-the-counter home medications for hemorrhoids.

Diet as Internal Hemorrhoids Medicine

Diet rich in fiber serves as natural internal hemorrhoids medicine. Fiber-rich diet makes bowel movement soft and easy, preventing straining of the rectal vessels that cause and/or aggravate hemorrhoids. Natural dietary fiber is abundant in fresh vegetables and fruits but commercial fiber supplements also serve the same important purpose. Another role of diet as natural internal hemorrhoids medicine is seen in its antioxidant content. Antioxidants boost immunity by fighting off harmful chemical molecules in the body. Nutritional hemorrhoid treatment supplements containing flavonoids, and other such substances, are helpful in reducing inflammation associated with internal hemorrhoids. Daflon is a nutritional supplement that has been found effective as a dietary internal hemorrhoids medicine.

Prescribed and Over-the Counter Medicine for Internal Hemorrhoids

Several brands and various forms of over-the-counter internal hemorrhoids medicine are available in the market. These provide relief from the annoying symptoms of internal hemorrhoids, especially from itching, pain, and inflammation. Coming mostly as gels or ointments, some types of internal hemorrhoids medicine include topical corticosteroid creams or foams and topical anesthetics that numb the affected area for some time, relieving inflammation. A popular internal hemorrhoids medicine is the 5 percent lidocaine ointment. It is important to remember that topical corticosteroids are not recommended for long-term use due to their side effects, some of which may pose a serious health threat in the long run. Other common types of internal hemorrhoids medicine sold over-the-counter include Anusol, Colace, Surfak, and medicated wipes (Tucks). A number of prescribed medicines are also meant for relieving symptoms of internal hemorrhoids. Most of these creams and gels use hydrocortisone as the effective ingredient.

Herbal / Home Remedies

In addition to diet and medicated creams and gels, many herbal or home remedies serve as natural internal hemorrhoids medicine. More common of these herbs used for treating symptoms of internal hemorrhoids include Aloe Vera gel, Butcher's Broom extract, Dandelion tincture, Witch Hazel essence, and Psyllium seeds etc. Herbal remedies do not have many side effects but pregnant women and people with allergies or cardiovascular diseases should consult a doctor before using any of these herbs.
