Female Hemorrhoids

hemorrhoids productsHemroids appear due to the swelling of blood vessels in the rectal area. While they affect millions of men and women worldwide, female hemroids may result, besides other reasons, due to pregnancy. Some women suffer from female hemroids during their first pregnancy while those who have once been pregnant are more likely to get it during their next pregnancy. Furthermore, women may also get hemroids during the second stage of labor i.e. during childbirth. In any case, some measures need to be taken to speed up the healing process and get relief from the painful symptoms of hemroids.

Female Hemroids and Pregnancy

One can naturally get curious to know the connection between pregnancy and female hemorrhoids. It turns out that more than one reason is involved here. The primary cause of hemroids is thought to be increased pressure on the blood vessels in the lower rectal area. In pregnancy, the growing uterus exerts pressure directly on the veins that carry blood from the lower limbs. The result is a decrease in blood flow from the lower half of the body and hence an increase in the pressure on rectal area. This increased pressure leads to the swelling of the rectal veins. Another factor responsible for increase in pressure on the rectal vessels is constipation that is frequently associated with pregnancy.

Straining during hard bowel movements can lead to female hemroids in pregnant women or aggravate already existing hemroids. Yet another influence inducing hemroids in pregnant women is the hormone called progesterone. During pregnancy, this hormone allows the walls of the vessels (veins) to relax – and hence swell – with greater ease. In addition, progesterone is known to have a role in causing constipation. Thus female hemroids during pregnancy is also, in part, the result of progesterone action in the body.

Relief and Treatment

Hemroids is an extremely annoying and painful medical condition which consists of various types including bleeding hemroids, internal and external hemroids. Some simple hemroid remedies, however, can bring quick relief from hemroids including the burning, itching, and inflammation that characterize the condition. A tried and effective remedy for female hemroids is applying an ice pack to the hemroid-affected area several times daily. This helps alleviate the swelling and discomfort of the rectal area. Cold compresses, saturated with witch hazel (an astringent obtained from the shrub with the same name), also have a soothing effect and may be used instead of icepacks.

Warm baths are another means of getting quick relief from hemroids discomfort. Submerging the rectal area in a sitz bath (hip bath) is also helpful for this purpose. A useful tip in reducing the irritation caused by cleaning the affected area is to use a soft, white, unscented toilet paper instead of the colored varieties that are also often scented. It is better to moisten the tissue with clean water before wiping the affected area with it. Medicated wipes are also available now for hemroid patients. Women suffering from female hemroids should not use topical medication or drugs without consulting their doctor.
